July 5, 2025

Dates and time: 5 & 6 July, 14h & 16h.              Price: €7 pp. (tickets available soon)

This event is part of “NDSM Art Walks: 7 wanderings guided by artists” for 750 Amsterdam. More info below!

The NDSM wharf is a place to wander and be inspired by all forms of art and creativity. As an artist working in this field, Esther Kin would like to show you around in a way that takes you into part of my work process. Esther thinks it can also encourage you to create or realise new things. By becoming aware of the images, objects, sound or other sensations that appeal to your interest at that moment, you begin your own creative process, something that is not only reserved for artists. It can be an impetus for a new idea, plan, decision or awareness of what is already there. By looking at art and creative expressions in this way, you can use your personal interests even better in shaping your daily life.

Place: Start at Treehouse NDSM
Duration: 1 or 2 hours
Language: EN/NL

ABOUT ESTHER KIN

Esther Kin loves the combination of emotion and movement. Two things she always tries to use in her work. Materials that work well for her are ink and brushes. She can make a big gesture without being tempted to distort or cover something up, which often detracts from the spontaneity. Finding the balance between control and expression (letting go) is a real challenge to create work that is open and inviting, shows courage, but does not overflow with brutality. In her current work she worked on Motion Graphic Design, animation, illustration and calligraphy. All invisible preludes to her current developments. She enjoys supporting others in finding their creative language, with which they can give their own interpretation to the things that are close to their hearts.

NDSM Art Walks: 7 wanderings guided by artists (750 Amsterdam)

With a history that goes back more than a hundred years, NDSM is a place of great importance to Amsterdam. Beyond its status as a monumental industrial area, in the last few decades NDSM has become a home for artistic breeding grounds, countless creators, cultural organisations, restaurants, festivals, street art and ongoing housing developments. The histories of NDSM are multiple and its future is open, creating opportunities for different voices and stories to emerge.

In this context (and to celebrate the 750 years of Amsterdam), six cultural organisations based in NDSM came together to offer a unique experience in and of the area. The organisations are: Stichting NDSM Wherf, Beautiful Distress, Over Het Ij, Treehouse NDSM, Art City NDSM and NDSM Fuse. Each organisation invited an individual artist or duo to create a guided tour in which they would highlight less known aspects of NDSM, or invite the participants to engage with the space in alternative ways and perspectives. Residents from Amsterdam and other visitors will be taken along through multi-sensory journeys, be lured around by a fictional pirate ration station, or be asked to discover its hidden messages through field research methods.

In addition to the seven live tours, the cultural partners will work together with podcast makers Visionair Ordinair, based at Treehouse NDSM, to translate these tours into an online podcast that can be listened to for free by everyone who walks on the site.

How will it work?
Once a month from May to October 2025, one of the partners will present their tour. The tour will be carried out four times during one weekend, each for a maximum of 30 participants. The tours will be given mostly in Dutch, but some will be available in English as well.
