Viewing our reality with optimism means recognizing that another future is possible but not guaranteed. We live in an anthropogenic era, where human decisions, whether political, economic, technological or cultural, carry consequences on a planetary scale.

Efficiency and productivity have become the most valuable assets in the golden age of capitalism. We can no longer ignore the fact the design of products is a major contributor to and a beneficiary of our current environmental crisis.

As production and consumption accelerate, we must rethink dominant models and engage in meaningful collaboration with materials. Not to reduce waste after the fact, but to prevent it through deeper understanding and responsible making. Above all, as creative minds, we face a moral responsibility in choosing how our practice contributes to the current environmental crisis.

What role does art play in changing the landscape of the production and consumption market? Could art offer insights into alternative models of materiality and circularity that challenge today’s efficiency and economy-driven society and spur change?

While it is not up to the artist to solve global problems, their work and often their foresight can help illuminate complex issues and inspire new ways of thinking. The artists in this exhibition show that taking decisive action leads to significant impact, inspiring us to take the first step ourselves.

The exhibition Temporarily Out of Place explores alternatives through projects that go beyond the boundaries of current production systems. Apply for the open call with a proposal that offers situated responses to large-scale challenges and contributes to the development of alternative circular systems. Submissions may span various media, including performance, painting, making, installation, and video.

Submission deadline: August 15, 2025.

Exhibition Dates: November 13 - December 7, 2025.

SELECTION OF ARTISTS
The selection committee, led by Treehouse NDSM director and this exhibition's curator Esther Kin, will choose up to 10 artworks that bring unique interpretations to the theme. The artworks will be exhibited on the 100m2 mezzanine of Treehouse NDSM's Pavilion. The curators will consider the relevance to the theme and the medium used, and will be especially interested in giving a voice to artists from Amsterdam Noord. An artistic fee will be given to each artist participating in the exhibition.

Please keep in mind that Treehouse NDSM is not a traditional gallery space. Treehouse NDSM supports multi-disciplinary artists in bringing their projects to life by offering 100 individual and affordable studios for rent, as well as access to exhibition spaces and the opportunity of participating in a vibrant and collaborative artistic community. It is an artistic incubator where artists and audiences use their imagination to create their vision of the world.
